Outlook Google Calendar Sync (OGCS) vs. CalendarBridge

Learn more about these two popular options calendar syncing solutions.

Note: CalendarBridge is not affiliated with Outlook Google Calendar Sync

Windows Application vs. Cloud-Based Service

Outlook Google Calendar Sync (OGCS) is a Windows application that you download and install on your Windows PC. OGCS can run only when your PC is running.

CalendarBridge is a cloud-based service for which there is nothing to install on any device. So you do not need a Windows PC and it is always running even if all of your devices are off.

Classic Outlook for Windows vs. All Versions of Outlook (or no Outlook at all)

Outlook Google Calendar Sync (OGCS) accesses your calendar by integrating with Classic Outlook for Windows. The synced events will still show up in other versions of Outlook, but you must install OGCS on a PC that runs Classic Outlook for Windows.

CalendarBridge accesses calendars directly on the Exchange server and does not interface with Outlook directly. So there is no requirement to use Classic Outlook for Windows.

Interval-based syncing vs. push-based syncing

Outlook Google Calendar Sync (OGCS) supports syncing manually (i.e., you click a button to sync), syncing on a set interval (every 15 minutes is the fastest interval you can set as of May 2024), and it also supports push-based syncing for changes made in Outlook, but not for changes made in Google. So Google events synced to Outlook can be 15 minutes (or more) out of date.

CalendarBridge uses push-based syncing in both directions between Outlook and Google. CalendarBridge continuously listens for changes on both Google and Outlook calendars and syncs immediately upon detecting a change. Changes typically propagate  in both directions within a minute or two.

Support for iCloud calendars and Internet calendars

Outlook Google Calendar Sync (OGCS) supports bidirectional syncing of Outlook and Google calendars.

CalendarBridge supports bi-directional syncing of Outlook, Google, and iCloud calendars . It also supports syncing from published Internet calendars (URLs ending in .ics), which enables syncing from calendar providers such as Fastmail, Proton Mail, and Zoho to Google, Outlook, and/or iCloud calendars.

Which one to choose?

Outlook Google Calendar Sync is the right choice IF you use Classic Outlook for Windows AND at one or both of the following are true:

  1. Budgets are tight and you need free software.
  2. You need to sync an Outlook calendar that only exists on your PC, and not in the cloud.

Otherwise, CalendarBridge is a better choice because:

  • It does not require Classic Outlook for Windows (or even owning a Windows PC, for that matter).
  • It is always running, even if your devices are not.
  • If is fast — changes on both Outlook and Google calendars sync in real-time (typically within a minute or two)
  • It supports more calendar types.
  • Although it is not free, it is still very inexpensive considering the time and hassle it saves for people with many calendars.
